SUPPORT : WEB HOSTING

  1. I get a "404 File Not Found" error when I try to go to my webpage
    - This is generally caused by one of two things:
    1. your FTP client did not successfully upload your file to your web site (the file is not actually there). Uploading again or using a different FTP client, if necessary, will resolve this.
    2. the file you're looking for is misspelled or has a different case than you've typed (EG: "www.sinewave.com/SUPPORT" will result in a 404 error, as the correct directory name is support, lower-case; therefore, the correct URL would be "www.sinewave.com/support").

  2. No one but me can see my web site.
    - If you've just registered your domain name with the Internic, then you can expect that the rest of the world won't be aware of your new domain for up to one week. Only Sine Wave dial-up customers will be able to see your site until that week has passed.

  3. I would like to password-protect my web page.
    - Please see our password page for instructions on how to do this.

  4. Im trying to run a perl and/or cgi script, but I keep getting a "403 Forbidden" error when I try.
    - In order for a perl/cgi script to run, you'll need to change the permissions on the file to allow anyone to execute it. To do this, you'll need to send the following command to the ftp server: "quote site chmod 755 [filename]" . We've listed specific instructions on how to do this in WS-FTP (PC) and Fetch (Macintosh), two very popular FTP clients.

    WS-FTP Instructions.
    1. connect to site
    2. right-click on right window-pane
    3. select "chmod (UNIX)"
    4. select all checkboxes for owner, read and execute for all "Group" and "Other."

    Fetch Instructions.
    1. connect to site
    2. select the 'Remote' menu, 'Set Permissions'
    3. select all checkboxes for owner, read and execute for "Group" and "Other.

  5. I'm trying to run a perl and/or cgi script, but I keep getting a "500 Server Error" when I try.
    - This generally occurs as a result of an error in the perl script. In order to debug your perl/cgi scripts, you'll need to run them on your local computer using a distribution of perl for your Operating System. We recommend Active State's Perl for Win32 for PC users and MacPerl for Macintosh users. Once your script runs well, then you can try again.

  6. I want to run Java servlets on my web site.
    - Currently, Sine Wave does not support Java. We offer Java support on dedicated servers only.

  7. My web page is supposed to do something when a user clicks on the 'submit' button, but nothing happens when I try.
    - This type of functionality generally requires programming of some sort. Sine Wave offers programming of this type, please see our services page for more information or contact us.

  8. I want to see the log files for my web site that show which web pages people visited.
    - All web sites that Sine Wave hosts automatically have a file called 'ACCESSLOG' which shows which files were accessed on a site. To view it, you can go to: www.yourdomain.com/ACCESSLOG. If you'd like to see some sort of clean reporting of the traffic on your site, please contact us for more infromation.

  9. My ftp program gives me an error when I try to upload a file to my web site. - Sine Wave has implemented a Quota system which disallows users from putting more files in their folders than they're alloted. If this is the case, then you can contact us to purchase more disk space, or you can delete some files to make room for your new files.

  10. I need to get an FTP program, which one does Sine Wave support or recommend and where do I download it from?
    - Sine Wave doesn't support, recommend or prefer any one FTP client over another, but we have heard good reviews from our customers:
For the PC, most users seem very happy with WS-FTP.
For the Macintosh, most users enjoy Fetch.

  11. I'd like to use a perl library, but Sine Wave doesn't have the one I need installed.
    - For security reasons (to prevent hacking, etc.), Sine Wave purposely installs only a bare-bones set of perl libraries. If your site requires other libraries, please contact us with details, so that we can asses the situation with you.

  12. I'd like to set up a virtual domain (EG: "my.domain.com" instead of or in addition to "www.domain.com").
    - There are two options with doing this:
    1. virtual domain points to a new web site which is independent of www.domain.com. If this is the case, then you will need to purchase another web site account from Sine Wave.
    2. virtual domain points to the same web site. This service is free, please contact us to arrange this.
